4 Things to Ask Yourself Before Posting to Instagram For Senior Photographers

If you struggle with what to post to your Instagram account for your senior photography business, listen up my friend :)

If you’ve ever said any of the following, this is your clue to pay close attention to this blog post. It’s for you!

  • “But they don’t engage”.

  • “I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”

  • “They don’t follow me back.”

  • “They don’t even post. I never see anything in my feed.”

Your Instagram account is a little peek behind the curtain to your senior photography business. It is your main platform (when used correctly) for getting noticed, increasing traffic to your website, booking senior sessions and increasing your portrait sales.

But it’s not always easy to know what to post to social media. I have to think through whether what I am about to post to Instagram is intentional or am I just using this as filler content?

Posting quality and strategic content on Instagram is the best way to share more about your senior photography business and what you believe in with your audience and potential clients. It can help start conversations with new leads for your business or it can completely turn them away! So, it is very important that you are purposeful with the content you are sharing on Instagram.

If you struggle deciding what you should be posting, whether it be to your feed, your stories or reels, there are 4 things you need to ask yourself before putting it out to the Instagram world. These simple questions to ask yourself will help your senior photography business’ Instagram content thrive and reach the audience you actually want to build!

It can help start conversations with new leads for your photography business or it can completely turn them away! So, it is very important that you are purposeful with the content you are sharing on Instagram. Be sure to ask yourself these 4 questions before posting to your Instagram feed, Instastories or Reels.

Here are 4 Things to Ask Yourself Before Posting to Instagram:

  1. Does this speak to my ideal client?

Sit back and think about your post, story or reel you are about to post. Then think about your ideal client, a high school senior. Is what you are about to post something that they would be interested in? Really think about WHO YOU ARE WANTING TO BOOK A SESSION. If it does not attract that client, then do not post it. Always remember who your audience is or who you want your audience to be before posting. Here’s a common mistake that I see, especially with reels: senior photographers posting content for other senior photographers. Umm, not your market. Likes from other photographers will not pay your studio rent.

  2. Will this spark conversation?

Ok, so is your post conversational or are you just stating facts like “We couldn’t have asked for a prettier day for Sophie’s session” or “Yay for Senior Sunday”. Posts like this do not encourage comments at all. Be sure you are getting your audience’s attention. And ask a question they would actually answer. Keep it simple - this or that? 1, 2 or 3? Red or blue? The easier to answer the more chances you have of someone actually responding :)

  3. Does this align with my brand message?

Before you can answer this question, you’ll need to do some inner work on this if you haven’t done it already. But real quick, do you know your brand message? Do you know why you do what you do? Do you know your brand words and the purpose of your business? Part of my brand message for my senior photography business is to build confidence. So I always try to make sure my posts align with that message. Always be sure ANYTHING you post aligns with your brand’s message. It’s easy to get passionate about a particular topic, but be really careful not to mix your very strong and potentially polarizing personal feelings & beliefs with your business account.

  4. Is this for her or me?

Here’s what I mean by that. Who are you posting for? Is it for your client? Is it to celebrate someone? Is it to send some positivity out into the world? Or is it for you? I know this one is hard to face, but I’ve had to do it too. I hope you will honestly answer that question. If you are posting with intentions of getting featured, showing off your skills a little bit or have any other motive, you might want to check yourself before hitting publish.

If you can answer ‘YES’ to those first questions AND if you can honestly say that what you are about to share is “for her”, then post away! But if not, step back, reevaluate it, ask yourself what can be done better to get to “YES” and “IT’S DEFINITELY FOR HER”. If you can do that, then you are on the right track.
